Dr. Kristen Schmaltz is our medical missionary in Guinea, West
Africa . She is a pediatrician at the Compassion Evangelical Hospital (click on CEH) in Mamou, a small town located about 120 miles inland from the coast. Kristen says, "As a medical missionary, my call is two-fold. Not only do I have the privilege of helping bodies heal, but by sharing the Gospel, I witness the Holy Spirit healing broken or dead hearts!"
At 94,919 square miles, Guinea is roughly the size of the United
Kingdom and slightly smaller than the U.S. state of Oregon. There
are 200 miles of coastline. France colonized Guinea in the 1890's
and made it part of French West Africa. Guinea declared its
independence from France on 2 October 1958. Since its independence, Guinea has had autocratic rulers who have
made Guinea one of the poorest countries.
In addition to Dr. Kristen, Christ Memorial supports other missionary efforts: Rev. Frederick Reinhardt in Senegal, West Africa, Rev. Karim
Baidaoui, missionary to Muslims, Dallas-Ft. Worth, and Dimas
Jimenez, missionary to Hispanics, Spring Branch (Houston). During
2009, Christ Memorial supported some 40 ministry and mission efforts.
Picture on right shows Dr. Kristen and her patient Tcherno. Tcherno was
born prematurely in December 2009 and weighed only 3 1/2 lbs. at
birth. Through special feeding, modern medical care, and prayers,
Tcherno now (March 2010) weighs 9 lbs. and is a cute interactive baby.
